I Generalize

Was in Cheyenne, Wyoming last night. Wyoming tied with Utah as Bush's largest state margin of victory. (69%) Expected the guy I was hangin with to be a likewise idiot. Instead he believes Bush is legitimately insane and that socialism will inevitably overtake the US in the not too distant future. Nothing is homogeneous.

Birhan Woldu

This is something that has been bugging me for a number of months and peaked at Live 8. Birhan Woldu was the face of famine in Ethiopia at age 3, but managed to survive and even prosper since. The British tabloids, Tony Blair, and unfortunately even Bob Geldof have trotted her around as symbol of Live Aid's success with factual misrepresentations abound. In reality, a Canadian reporter, Brian Stewart, who first gave global profile to the famine, has been funding the well-being and education for her entire family since 1988. He's done it all on his own dime and has never sought profile for it. This small article touches on the history. The real heros will almost always go unnoticed.

Live 8

Now for the most offensive case of corporate pandering I've ever heard: Live 8 had many corporate sponsors, including among them, Rogers Communications. (For you non-Canadians, Rogers is a multi-billion dollar communications empire) Their ads during the event had this tag-line: "If we shout loud enough, maybe they'll hear us" WTF?...Rogers is "they" and I don't see them shouting about fuck all.
