Leave The People of Iraq Out of It

As the anti-Iraq sentiment is beginning to boil again (inexplicably with little to no evidence of any connection to the WTC attacks) with these assholes in the US State Department and an army of hopeless commentators on CNN, I thought it might be useful for everyone to be aware of the hardship the Americans continue to put the people of Iraq through via a vengeful sanction regime that is long past its due date.
Link: World Health Organization report on Iraq
You read it correctly:
Pre-1990 child malnutrition: statistically unseen
Today: over 800,000 under the age of 5 (some estimates are MUCH higher)
And some wonder why Iraq regrets the loss of life at the WTC, but won't send "condolences" to the US government...

All in Jerseys

I think this is one of the only live pics in existence. Not sure the exact date on this one. I'm guessing 97 or 98? I can't even remember who took it but that's definately the Starfish Room.

Window of Opportunity

Yesterday I saw one of the backstreet boys (the one with the rugged jaw) wondering aloud in an interview if there was something the American government wasn't telling its people...some aspect of US foreign policy that might give others in this world a reason to commit an attack like this...when guys like THAT are talking in the mainstream media about a potential context and motivation to this all, you've got to think that the window of opportunity for the US to attack without discretion, or even attack at all, may be closing fast with each passing day.

We All Know What Happened Today...

Do NOT let yourself be pushed into bashing the Palestinian, Muslim or Afghani people as a result of this horrific action. I'm starting to get the sense that the American media is about to get a serious hate on for the Islamic world and everyone in it.

American Media = Justice??

I can't believe what I just saw...Tonight, 60 minutes ran a segment nailing Kissinger for his complicity with the military overthrow of Allende in Chile in '73. I never ever thought the American media was going to step up on that one. Though they're 30 years late, my faith in the American press has been slightly (very slightly) restored. You can read more about the coup and Kissinger's involvement in this piece from the Guardian (July 01)

Remember Sammy Jankis

Just finished watching Memento for the third time. All i can say is, i can't wait to watch it again! This is slowly becoming my favorite film of all time. I noticed something really cool tonight that i missed during the first couple viewings.
If you own the DVD, go to the scene where Sammy Jankis is sitting in the mental hospital. Watch it VERY carefully. Frame by frame if you have to, and study each frame untill you see it. You'll know what i'm talking about when you see it.
note to canadians: if you're planning on buying the DVD, keep in mind that the Canadian release does not have the special features that the American release has. Apparently, the features aren't anything too special, but if you're a fan of the movie, you might want to look in to tracking down a copy of the American release.

State of the Union

For anyone who had the fucking misfortune to endure more than 3 minutes of the MTV Music Vid Awards...there must be a disconnect. Right? I mean, anyone can see on the news that a lot of kids are up in arms protesting just about anything. Is this the shit they listen to? It can't be. I wonder if the grip on the culture industry is so strong now that another Nirvana just isn't going to slip into the limelight again.
And if I hear another multi-platinum 'artist' thank Jebus Christ instead of their label's marketing director, imma jump out the fucking window.
Apologies for addressing a subject that really has no place being addressed.

All too Fractured

Israel has A LOT to answer for: rights have been violated repeatedly; excessive violence has been employed; Sharon (and Arafat) has turned the middle east into a total mess, no doubt ...but the declaration naming Israel, and only Israel, as a "racist apartheid state" guilty of "war crimes, acts of genocide and ethnic cleansing" at the World Conference's Non-Governmental Organization (NGO) forum seems totally unproductive to me. This Forum is running parallel to the UN Racism Forum in South Africa. It is just brutal that Israel be selected is isolation when there are so many other nations perpetrating crimes as bad, or worse, seemingly based on race. (Read: Sudan, Indonesia, Afghanistan, India, and a myriad of others. Or even the disproportionatly black US prison population!) Human Rights Watch and Amnesty International will not participate in the Israeli declaration. Kofi Annan now has his hands full trying to regain some semblance of a constructive dialogue at what began as a very well-intentioned conference.
